Have a Healthy Halloween!
Throughout the year, you made changes to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Or maybe you’ve been contemplating wanting to make healthy lifestyle changes, but now the holidays are here and the temptation to wait for the new year is high.
The holidays can pose as a challenge for those looking to adopt or maintain a healthy lifestyle–and Halloween is just the beginning.
There is no day like today to start your healthy lifestyle.
How Can I Be Healthy AND Enjoy the Sweets?
Get Moving!
It has slowly become a trend in some areas for some parents to drive their children from house to house, or even for parents to drive behind and follow their children as they walk from house to house. Rather than sitting in the car, walk around the neighbhorhood and earn extra steps.
Have a Healthy Meal BEFORE Trick-or-Treating
Eating a meal before collecting candy will likely help you and your children overcome the temptation to overeat all their candy at once.
Drink Healthy Liquids
If you tend to drink soda, cut back on soda for the day and reduce the amount of sugary drinks to counteract the sugar in the candy.
Use a Smaller Candy Bag/Bucket
By using a smaller candy bag, you can create the illusion that your children collected a FULL bag of candy! They will feel accomplished and so will you when you ultimately reduce the amount of candy you bring home.
Take Smaller Bites
If you are going to a festival or a Halloween party that offers a lot of food items, offer to share these food items with a friend or take a smaller bite or portion so you can enjoy your surroundings the way you would like while maintaining healthy choices the way you like.
Opt for Sugar-Free Candies
If you are passing out candy, buy sugar-free candy items that you won’t mind eating if you do not end up passing out all of your candy.
OTHER SAFETY GUIDELINES
- Check Before Crossing
- As always, look both ways before crossing the street.
- Check the Expiration Labels
- Check for Opened Candy
- Double check all candy that you collect before consuming it!
- Stranger Danger
- Plan ahead in case you happen to get separated from your children. Both you and your children should know exactly what to do to reunite, whether it be to call immediately or have a common meeting place in mind.
- Wear something bright that glows to help make you and your children more visible to one another.
