Frequently Asked Questions
Crisis & Emergency Services
What do I do if I need help right away?
In the case that you are experiencing an emergency or crisis, please dial 911 or contact your local emergency facility. You may also receive crisis support from the following resources:
National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-784-2433
Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741
Veterans Crisis Hotline: 1-800-273-8255
National Sexual Assault Hotline: 1-800-656-4673
What is an emergency / crisis situation?
Emergency or crisis situations are subjective and dependent upon what your typical “normal” is. Some examples of emergency and crisis situations include: imminent suicide (having a plan and intent to kill yourself), imminent homicidal thoughts or thoughts to severely harm another person, experiencing a recent or sudden trauma, gross impairments in thinking, engaging in bizarre behavior, and/or severely losing emotional control.
Cost & Payments
Do you take insurance?
I do not accept insurance. If your employer funds or offers you an HRA card (a Health Reimbursement Account), also referred to as an HSA (Health Savings Account), that maintains a balance, I can accept this as a form of payment.
Out-of-Network Coverage
There is a possibility that your plan may reimburse you for a portion of your financial investment if you have out-of-network coverage. To understand what benefits you have, you can call your provider and ask the following questions:
1) What are my routine behavioral health care benefits?
2) Does my primary care physician (PCP) need to provide me a referral?
3) Do I have a deductible? What is it? Have I met it?
4) How much coverage do you provide for out of network services?
5) If you do provide partial coverage for out-of-network services, what are the credentials my therapist must have so I can receive the reimbursement? (My therapist is an LAC).
Why don't you accept insurance?
For a therapist to accept payment from an insurance company, they are required to submit a diagnosis and maintain very specific documentation that interferes with the protection of your privacy. It is important to me to not just protect your privacy, but also to maintain your confidentiality. I believe what is said between us should stay between us. Therefore, I choose not to communicate sensitive information unnecessarily. Moreover, insurance policies and state laws are subject to change without warning, which can upend your treatment and progress. By assuming financial responsibility for your health, you maintain control of your services. You are in charge of when they start and when they end without being confined by company restrictions.
How much do your services cost?
Service costs differ depending on the type of mental health service and are subject to change. For the most accurate and up to date information, please contact me directly.

What can we expect when starting couples counseling?
Using the Gottman-Method, assessment takes place over three separate 80-90 minute sessions. During the first session, your counselor will take the time to learn about the history of your relationship. After the first session, you will be asked to complete a series of questionnaires, called the Gottman Relationship Check-Up Analysis. The Gottman Institute charges $39 to access the questionnaires. Your counselor will invite you to complete the questionnaires. In that invite, you will be asked to pay the Gottman Institute directly.
During the second session, the counselor will meet with you and your partner individually, for 45 minutes each (totaling 90 minutes). This is an opportunity for your counselor to learn more about your personal history and background.
Between sessions two and three, your counselor will review a very thorough analysis of the relationship and create a comprehensive treatment plan. This takes about 2-3 hours outside of session for your counselor to complete.
Finally, the assessment process is wrapped up during session three. Your counselor will summarize everything they have learned about the relationship, provide a breakdown of the Gottman Sound Relationship House model, and identify goals unique to your relationship based on this model’s method.
Do you offer discounts? A sliding scale?
In an effort to provide counseling services to individuals of all economic means, Retreat Counseling & Wellness offers sliding scale options for all parties. Financial need is self-assessed. Clients may speak with their counselor to complete the Sliding Scale Agreement. Clients will have an opportunity to negotiate rates within a preset range.

Social Media Use
Can I follow you on social media?
You are welcome to follow RC&W’s professional social media pages. However, this is not and never will be a requirement. That said, I will not follow, friend, comment, or respond to your social media requests on personal platforms. Moreover, I will not look you up or engage with your friends or family members. This is a strict policy set forth by the American Counseling Association and it is in place to further protect your privacy and confidentiality.
Please note: If you choose to follow any of RC&W’s professional pages, you do so at your own risk. While these pages may provide information and connect you to other resources, these social media platforms are not an adequate means of contacting me between services. You may contact me between services through encryption platforms that we will discuss before we begin working together.

Wellness Services
So many options. Where should I start?
The key to improving overall wellness and living a healthful and satisfying life is simply to START. Rather than letting your health overwhelm you, consider pursuing just one of the seven domains of wellness. Which area interests you the most? There is no right or wrong place for you to start, as long as you START. You will thank yourself in the long run.
What can I expect from our first meeting?
The first time we meet, we will discuss and review very important informed consent and confidentiality paperwork These statements outline your rights. They also identify and give us an opportunity to overcome any barriers that might affect our ability to conduct private and confidential services.
Once you feel comfortable, we will begin discussing what your goals are and together, we will devise a plan to accomplish those goals. The first meeting is typically scheduled to last 90 minutes.
Is one service better than the other?
Each service offered tends to a different domain of wellness. Some services help to improve multiple domains at once while others focus on one at a time. In time however, you will find that each domain is so interconnected that regardless of the service you choose, improving wellness in one area directly influences overall wellness in other areas.
Counseling Services
How will we meet for therapy?
Individual and couples counseling will be conducted using telehealth services. You will have access to a secure and encrypted client portal that we will use to meet during each appointment.
Group therapy may be conducted using similar distant counseling technology or in-person at a secure location. This information will be disclosed to group members prior to the group’s first meeting.
What do I need for Telehealth services?
Telehealth is a means of virtually attending a counseling session. It uses technologies such as desktop computers, laptops, smartphones, social media, and “other audio and/or video communication, data storage devices or media” (ACA, 2014, H.4.a.). Each of these modes requires you to have a secure and reliable internet connection. Additionally, the device you use must have a camera feature so you and I can see each other and be as physically present as possible throughout the session.
Group Therapy
How will we meet for group?
Group therapy may be conducted virtually, using telehealth services, or face-to-face in a secure, HIPAA-compliant location. More specific details and information will be made available to group participants before each meeting.
How long does group last?
Depending on the groups’ needs, groups may last anywhere between 60 and 120 minutes. The average is 90 minutes.
The lifespan of a group may also fluctuate depending on group needs. At minimum, a group will usually last at least 8 weeks. Others can span up to a year. This, of course, is influenced by how often the group meets (once/twice a week versus once a month).
What can I expect from our first meeting?
The first time the group meets, we will review and discuss informed consent and confidentiality and answer any questions you may have. Then we will address the group’s objective, expectations, and what the general goal is for coming together. Afterwards, group members will have an opportunity to introduce themselves and establish a set of group rules they feel are appropriate.
How much does group therapy cost?
Typically, group therapy rates range between $10 – 30 per session. Open-Groups are pay as you go and closed-groups require full payment up front. This is because significant time goes into planning for a closed-group–topics and materials. Closed-group membership is also limited. This means, if you or any other group member drops out or stops coming, they will not be replaced. This can negatively impact the quality of the group. That said, to increase commitment, closed-group members first go through a screening to ensure membership is appropriate at this given time. To further encourage commitment, membership is paid in full. For instance, for a group that will meet 8 times across its lifespan at $20 per session, the cost will be $160 up front. Refunds will not be granted for missed sessions.
Can I request a new group?
Absolutely! Groups are created based on the community’s needs. If you have a need or an idea for group and community support, please contact me at Jocelyn@RetreatCW.com.
Functional Movement Training
Who is functional movement training most appropriate for?
Functional movement can be beneficial and appropriate for most people. It increases muscle strength and stability and improves endurance. The type and quality of benefits you receive are directly related to the types of programs prescribed.
It is important to consult your general practitioner before committing to any physical activity program.
Can anyone participate in functional movement training?
As a health professional, I prefer to work with clients as holistically as possible, helping them achieve a more balanced sense of well-being. That said, my functional movement services are offered as an adjunct to individuals who are currently attending weekly, biweekly, or monthly counseling sessions.
What can I expect from our initial consultation?
Prior to making a commitment to functional movement training, you and I will discuss (among other things) your goals, potential health concerns, and any contraindications you may have. This meeting helps us determine if functional movement training with me is most appropriate for you at this time or if you might benefit more from another type of program.
How much do functional movement services cost?
Service costs are subject to change. For the most accurate and up to date information, please contact me directly. In order to participate in these services, you must be a current counseling client.
