The Gottman Method: An Evidence-Based Approach

Your counselor has completed Level 1 and Level 2 Gottman Trainings and understands the most important concepts to help you and your partner develop these skills to strengthen your relationship.

The Gottman Method has over 40 years of data that tells us exactly what keeps relationships strong and what breaks them apart. Using the Gottman Method, we break down the anatomy of your relationship and focus on emotion, behavior, shared meaning, personal stories, interactional patterns, and conflict.  The goal is to develop new skills that allow you and your partner to more easily identify emotions, manage conflict, nurture your friendship, and to create a system of shared meaning–things you look forward to.

A Better Way to Fight

The following PDF handout, as presented by The Gottman Institute, is an example of the skills you and your partner can practice when nagivating conflict. Managing conflict is an important skillset–one that we focus on in couples thearpy–to help you learn how to engage in conflict in a way that validates your own experience, while also respecting your partner’s experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can couples therapy help me?

Couples therapy is meant to help partners create awareness and better understand the various thoughts and emotions that make us human. For example, it is not wrong to feel a certain way (angry, hurt, or mistrusted). Rather, the way we communicate and interpret these emotions and the thoughts that accompany them are often what many couples find to be dysfunctional and cause stress. Therefore, in couples therapy, we work together to develop skills to improve “the way” you and your partner manage conflict and emotions.

How long is an appointment?

Couple’s counseling takes place in 75-90 minute sessions depending on the couple’s needs.

What can I expect from our first meeting?

During the first session, your counselor will take the time to learn about the history of your relationship. After the first session, you will be asked to complete a series of questionnaires, called the Gottman Relationship Check-Up Analysis. The Gottman Institute charges $39 to access the questionnaires. Your counselor will invite you to complete the questionnaires. In that invite, you will be asked to pay the Gottman Institute directly.

How will we meet?

Individual and couples therapy will be conducted using telehealth services. You will have access to a secure and encrypted client portal that we will use to meet during each appointment.
